How to Make Batik
-Traditional Wax-resist Dyeing Process Made by Human Hands -
1. Stamp
Press the copper stamp with melted wax on the fabric and make the pattern.
To avoid making pattern gaps, it would be done quickly and carefully.
1.模様付け
溶かした蝋を銅製のスタンプ型に付着させ、模様を描きます。
隙間の無いように、蝋の付き方が均等になるように素早くスタンプを押していきます。
2. Dyeing
Dye over the fabric that the wax stamped . The waxy areas are not dyed.
Carefully dyed one by one to avoid making unevenness.
2. 染色
1でスタンプした蝋の上から染色します。蝋のある部分は染色されません。
1枚1枚、ムラの内ないように丁寧に染色します。
3. Drying
Let the fabric dry and let the color penetrate. Dry in the place avoided direct sunlight.
3. 乾燥
乾かして色味を浸透させます。通常直射日光にあたらない、風通しのよいところで乾かします。
4. Removing Wax
Remove the wax in boiling water..
The waxy part would melts and the pattern comes out.
4. 蝋取り
熱々の釜で蝋を落とします。
蝋のある部分が溶け、模様が浮かび上がります。
5. Washing
Pull the cloth out of the pot and wash off the wax that could not be removed with water.
5. Drying
釜から布を引き上げて、落としきれなかった蝋を水で洗い落とします。
6. Drying
Dry it again and it is finished!
6. 乾燥
再度直射日光の当たらない場所で、乾燥させて完成です。
Each piece of fabric is made by warm hands of craftsman,and it is Batik.
モチーフのデザインによっては、一部だけ再度手で蝋で柄をふさぎ、染色を重ねることによって色彩を増やします。
一枚一枚、職人の手のぬくもりのあるものが、「ろうけつ染め」「バティック」なのです。
